Too many people think of invertebrate zoology as outdated, a field in which everything is already known, this book alters those perceptions, by presenting invertebrate zoology as a lively and modern area of ongoing and worthwhile biological inquiry.
Invertebrates cause directly or indirectly many diseases for humans, animals and plants, also they are near the base of most food webs in all habitats. Present research on invertebrates is helping to unravel of how immune recognition systems evolved and how they work. Interest is increasing as certain vertebrates are biological agents for controlling various agricultural pests and as sources of unique chemicals of potential biomedical importance. Invertebrates also have become widely used to evaluate and monitor pollutant stress in aquatic environments, also there is a growing concern about the increased spread of invertebrate species from many phyla into non-active habitats. The book expands on invertebrate classification and evolutionary relationships. A new feature was added to this edition entitled “Defining characteristics” as each new animal group is introduced, also most chapters conclude a section entitled “Search the Web” guiding students to particularly good sites associated with group under discussion. This book serves as the foundation for further learning in lecture, laboratory, field and library, the book also presents the basic vocabulary and grammar of invertebrate zoology. |
