This photo-essay depicts life in Afghanistan around 1995, just when the Taliban were taking hold of a large portion of the war torn country. Steele-Perkins' captivating photographs portray an accurate representation of the ordinary life of the Afghan people, living within a landscape of devastation and gloom.
This work also includes two essays, one written by Andre Velter and the other by Steele-Perkins. Several poems and works by the late Afghan poet, Sayd Bahodine Majrouh, accompany the photographs.

This atlas is divided into sections to display maps by regions, i.e., Egypt and the Fertile Crescent, as well as the expansion of Islam, The Extension of the Muslim World. There is also a section on The Early Muslim Earth and Sky.
In this second edition, new maps have been included, such as: The Arabian Peninsula in Islamic Times and The Fertile Crescent in the 11th/17th and 12th/18/th Centuries. A variety of new city maps have also been added: Dimashq (Damascus), Baghdad, and Cairo among others.
This edition is accompanied by a CD-ROM.
